Sixteenth century architecture
The Convent of Santa Ana, found in the town of Villasana de Mena, is the most important building from this time. It owes its construction to Sancho Ortiz de Matienzo, an influential figure at that time, being a canon in the cathedral of Seville and treasurer of the India Trading Company.

The oldest part of the convent was built between 1512 and 1517. This nucleus consisted of the chapter house, the cells and the cloisters all adjoining the Chapel of Santa Ana and was built with masonry. At this point the family burial place became the church for the new convent complex which was destined to house a community of twenty-one nuns dedicated to the Order of Franciscan Conceptionists.

The Tourist Office conducts pre-arranged guided tours of this interesting local monument with an entrance fee of 1 euro/person or 50 cents/person for groups of over 5 people.
